MAX DROVE TO ANOTHER MANSION. It wasn’t in the same neighborhood as the first, but the house wasn’t any less impressive.

“Who is this guy?” I asked as I hopped out of the truck. I was feeling better.

“His name is Dan Kincaid,” Max replied. “He’s a warlock.”

I frowned. “What’s with Little Rock and warlocks?”

Max’s laugh was light. He seemed relieved that I was no longer acting like the world’s most tempestuous teenager. “That’s a good question. My guess is they’re drawn to the lack of magic in the area. That places them at the top of the food chain. If they moved to a supernatural stronghold, they wouldn’t be considered a true power, and for men like Dan and Nathan, that’s simply not acceptable.”

It made sense.

Max had a big smile on his face when the door opened. The woman who answered was in a crisp white blazer. It looked like part of a uniform. She didn’t smile.

“Mr. Anderson?” she asked.

Max nodded. “Yes. I believe Mr. Kincaid is expecting me.”

The woman’s eyes moved to Sidney and me. “He didn’t mention others.”

“These are my associates. He’ll want to meet them.” Max sounded sure of himself, which seemed to be enough for the woman.

“This way.” She led us through the house, which had more in common with a train depot, and while opulent, didn’t scream comfort.

“He’s in the conservatory.” The woman gestured toward a huge glass room filled with plants, and I was instantly in love with it. I could see myself with a similar room—although much smaller—when Kade and I finally got our own house. I made a mental note to bring it up to him.

“Max!” A booming voice jerked me out of my reverie, and I shifted my eyes to the man rising from a chair behind a huge wrought iron table in the center of the room. He looked to be in his fifties, and his hair was thinning on top. His eyes were sharp as they roamed to Sidney and me. They lingered on me a bit longer than I was comfortable with.

“Hello, Dan.” Max sounded friendly as he strode forward to shake the man’s hand. “It’s good to see you. It’s been a long time.”

“A really long time,” Dan agreed. “Who are your friends?”

“This is Poet Parker.” Max motioned for me to step up beside him.

“Your daughter?” Dan almost looked amused. He assumed Max and I were together. This was his way of trying to shame Max.

“My future daughter-in-law,” Max replied readily. “She’s engaged to my son.”

“Really?” Dan’s brow furrowed. “I didn’t know you had a son.”

“His existence was something of a secret until about a year ago,” Max replied. He sat in one of the open chairs without prompting. “He joined my group after the death of his mother.”

“Ah.” Dan acted as if Max had told him the whole sordid story with a simple sentence. “I understand. Does that mean Poet is part of your group?”

“Yes,” Max replied. He pointed to the chairs. “Sit.”

I did as instructed. It
